Introduction
Installing rubber fenders correctly is crucial for protecting both vessels and port structures. Proper installation increases safety and performance during berthing and extends the fender’s service life. This guide answers the common question “How to install a rubber fender?” and provides clear, step-by-step instructions for engineers, contractors, and port operators.
Part I – Cell Fender System /Cone fender system Installation
Step a) Place the Front Panel
Place the front panel with the installed veneer on a flat rectangular sleeper, as shown in Figure (1).
Step b) Hoist the Fender Body
Lift the Cell or Cone rubber fender body onto the front panel. Make sure the fender body’s installation holes line up with the holes on the front panel, as shown in Figure (2).
Step c) Connect and Tighten Bolts
Attach the fender body to the front panel using the designated connecting bolts. Tighten all bolts firmly, as shown in Figure (3).
Step d) Move and Align the Assembly
Move the fender assembly onto the dock. Align it in the correct direction. Make sure the embedded sleeve is straight, as shown in Figure (4).
Step e) Fasten with Socket Bolts
Fasten the fender assembly using socket bolts. Do not fully tighten them yet, as shown in Figure (5).
Step f) Attach the Anchor Chain
Attach the anchor chain, extended to its maximum length, to the pre-embedded U-shaped ring on the dock. Connect it to the lifting ears on the front panel, as shown in Figure (6).
Step g) Fully Tighten Bolts
Tighten all previously loosened bolts completely.
Step h) Clean and Complete Installation
Remove any marks or stains created during installation. This completes the rubber fender installation.
Notes
-
Always use all four lifting holes when hoisting the Cell/Cone fender body. Do not lift using only one hole, as shown in Figure (7).
2.Fit rubber or nylon sleeves on all lifting equipment, cables, or chains. Operators may also use strong nylon slings.
3. Use steel pipes or wooden blocks to support and stabilize lifting slings horizontally.
4.During packaging, you may stack rubber fenders, but do not place heavy objects on the fender body.
Lifting the Front Panel and Fender Assembly
Lift the front panel using the upper lifting ears with the main steel wire rope, as shown in Figure (8). Before lifting the fenders, apply proper protection. Wrap thick canvas around the fenders. Use additional steel wire ropes to lift them safely, as shown in Figure (8).
